AViVA: da YouTube al primo album fisico. Intervista

Aviva è una cantautrice australiana divenuta famosa tramite una serie di singoli, come HUSHH, Streets, e GRRRLS, pubblicati su Youtube, e raccolti poi in un corpus intitolato Volume I (qui la recensione), pubblicato durante la pandemia del covid19.

Ciao Aviva, benvenuta su Shockwave Magazine. Quindi, Volume I è finalmente uscito: sei soddisfatta di come i tuoi fan abbiano ricevuto la tua prima compilation?

Ciao! Grazie per chiacchierare con me! Sì, sono davvero contenta di come è stato ricevuto l’album. I miei fan in tutto il mondo lo adorano e adorano il fatto di poter finalmente possedere la loro personale copia fisica della mia musica. Penso che al giorno d’oggi incentrato sulla tecnologia sia particolarmente importante per le persone.

Quindi, parliamo della tua musica. Hai costruito un suono molto personale e originale, fresco da ascoltare, anche quando è più cupo e più malinconico. Chi puoi nominare tra le tue influenze più importanti?

La mia band preferita in assoluto sono gli Smiths, e credo che l’angoscia e la malinconia che Morrissey ha messo nei suoi testi abbia sicuramente avuto un impatto su come scrivo i miei. Certo, ci sono altre influenze, ma tendo a basarmi di più sui sentimenti che la musica mi trasmette, questo significa che posso apprezzare una traccia di molti artisti diversi, vecchi e nuovi allo stesso modo!

Hai scelto un’immagine pubblica molto diversa da Ava Max, Dua Lipa e altre popstar relativamente “nuove”. Hai scelto di mantenere privata la tua vita privata, non di basare la tua figura sul tuo aspetto, e hai fatto sì che Max Prentis ti disegnasse come un fumetto francese degli anni Ottanta. Perché ti sei comportata così?

Mi sforzo di essere un modello per ragazze e ragazzi. Penso che chi sono pubblicamente sia molto rappresentativo di chi sono come persona. Il mio intero messaggio riguarda la capacità di essere se stessi autenticamente, nonostante le avversità, e credo che per trasmettere ciò le persone devono vedermi come un essere umano, non come un prodotto. Le opere che Max disegna, illustrano il mondo che sto costruendo per l’uscita del mio libro. È attraverso questa storia che sono in grado di approfondire la mia passione per l’espressione di sé e la creatività.

Gli outsider. Loro chi sono? Come dividi la composizione, gli arrangiamenti, il lavoro di produzione, tra te e loro? Per favore, parlami dell’ideazione di una canzone come Cemetery, sono genuinamente curiosa.

Gli OUTSiDERS sono i miei fan, è così che si chiamano e io li amo Matais C e io scriviamo la maggior parte della musica. Facciamo anche lavori di produzione con JP Fung.Cemetery è stata una canzone divertente che ho scritto. Volevo una canzone da “Halloween” ma che contenesse anche un avvertimento, un po ‘come il mio singolo HUSHH. Il cimitero consiste principalmente nel lasciarsi sedurre dall’attrattiva di “adattarsi”: non importa quanto ci provi, se non sei fedele a te stesso non finirà mai a tuo favore.

Le tue canzoni toccano temi come la solitudine, l’isolamento e l’orgoglio di essere esattamente ciò che vuoi essere: come si relaziona questo con qualsiasi evento nella tua vita?

Per tutta la vita mi sono sentito come se avessi interessi diversi dagli altri. Non è qualcosa che sento solo io, e di certo non mi rende speciale. So che molte persone si sentono in questo modo, ma nascondono chi sono per cercare di sembrare più ‘normali’ e, quindi, adattarsi. Con la mia musica, desidero ispirare le persone ad essere se stesse e ad esserne orgogliosi, come ho sempre fatto diciamo: si tratta di non adattarsi e di non volersi adattare ed accontentare.

Streets è una traccia impressionante. Fonde eccellenza tecnica con un’ottima narrazione. Potresti approfondire questa triste storia?

Grazie mille, sono davvero felice che ti piaccia! È una canzone che racconta una storia che ho sentito molte volte nella mia vita. È quando qualcuno ti chiama qualcosa, e potrebbe essere qualsiasi cosa, potrebbe qualsiasi cosa (molte persone lo hanno sperimentato in qualche modo.) Penso che una volta che chiami qualcuno qualcosa, le parole hanno molto potere, e quando senti qualcosa abbastanza può iniziare a diventare una realtà. Questo è fondamentalmente ciò di cui parla PSYCHO “ce l’ho in testa, attento a quello che hai detto”, quel testo lo riassume più o meno.

Sei diventata famosa su YouTube. E, quando hai finalmente pubblicato il tuo primo album, è stato durante un periodo di pandemia. Hai in programma un tour dal vivo?

Volevo pubblicare il mio album nonostante la pandemia perché credo che nei tempi difficili l’arte sia qualcosa in cui rifuggiarci nei momenti peggiori. Ho in programma di andare in tour … erano piani per il 2020 ma ora sono piani per il 2021. Spero di arrivare in Europa nell’estate del 2021!

Ti auguro davvero buona fortuna nell’industria musicale. Anche con miliardi di visualizzazioni su YouTube, hai continuato ad essere onesta, umile e puro. Temi di essere contaminata dalla logica della musica di oggi?

Grazie mille per aver parlato con me Cerco sempre di essere la mia me più autentica e sono certo di essere troppo psicopatica per essere mai contaminata da altri ideali. Mi è piaciuto molto rispondere alle tue domande, spero di poterti vedere presto a uno spettacolo di AViVA dal vivo!

Hello Aviva, welcome to Shockwave Magazine. So, Volume I is finally out: are you satisfied about how your fans received your first compilation?

Hello! Thanks for chatting with me!

Yes, I am SO happy with how Volume I has been received. My fans all around the world have been loving it and love that they can finally own their own physical copy of my music. I think in today’s tech-focused day and age that’s particularly important for people.

So, let’s talk about your music. You built up a very personal and original sound, fresh to listen to, even when darker and more melancholic. Who can you name among your most important influences?

My favourite band ever it The Smiths, and I think the angst and melancholy Morrisey put into his lyrics has definitely had an impact on how I write my own. Of course, there are other influences but I tend to go more on how music makes me feel, that means that I can like one song from a lot of different artists old, and new alike!

You chose a very different public image from Ava Max, Dua Lipa, and other relatively “new” popstars. You chose to keep private your private life, not to base your figura on your looks, and you let Max Prentis draw you as a french eighties comic. Why did you act like this?

I strive to be a role model for girls and boys alike. I think that who I am publicly is very authentic to who I am as a person. My whole message is about being yourself, despite adversity and I think that to do that I need people to see me as a person, not a product. The artwork that Max draws, illustrates the world I’m building for my book release. It is through this story that I am able to go deeper into my passion for self-expression and creativity.

The Outsiders. Who are they? How do you split the composition, arrangements, production work, between yourself and them? Please tell me about the conception of a song like Cemetery, I’m genuinely curious.

The OUTSiDERS are my fans, that is what they call themselves and I LOVE THEM. Matais C and I write the majority of the music. We also do production work with JP Fung.

Cemetery was a fun song I wrote. I wanted a ‘Halloween’ song but I also wanted a song that had a warning to it, a bit like my single HUSHH. Cemetery is primarily about getting seduced by the appeal of ‘fitting in’ — it doesn’t matter how much you try, if you aren’t true to yourself it will never end in your favour.

Your songs touch themes like solitude, isolation, and pride to be exactly what you want to be: how does this relate to any happening in your life?

My entire life I have felt like I have different interests to a lot of people. That isn’t a unique feeling and it certainly doesn’t make me special. I know that a lot of people feel this way, but they hide who they are to try and seem more ‘normal’ and fit in. With my music, I wish to inspire people to be themselves and be proud of it, like I always say- it’s about not fitting in, and not wanting to fit in.

Streets is an impressive track. It fuses technical excellence with very good storytelling. Could you please go deeper into this gloomy story?

Thank you so much, I’m glad you love it! It’s a song that tells a story that I have felt many times throughout my life. It’s when somebody calls you something, and it could be anything, it could anything (a lot of people have experienced this in some way.) I think that once you call somebody something words have a lot of power, and when you hear something enough it can start to become a reality. That’s basically what PSYCHO is about “got it in my head, careful what you said,” that lyric pretty much sums it up.

You became widely known on YouTube. And, when you finally released your first album, it was during a pandemic time. Do you have any plans for a live tour?

I wanted to release my album despite the pandemic because I believe that during difficult times art is something we all like to turn to for an escape. I do have plans to tour… they were 2020 plans but now they are 2021 plans. I am hoping to get to Europe in summer 2021!

I really wish you good luck in the music industry. Even with billions of views on YouTube, you kept on being honest, humble and pure. Do you fear you might be contaminated by nowadays music logic?

Thank you so much for talking to me. I always try to be my most authentic self and I’m certain that I am far too psycho to ever become contaminated by other ideals. I really enjoyed answering your questions, I hope I can see you all at a live AViVA show soon!
