Jaz Coleman: nuovo disco per il frontman dei Killing Joke

In quanto artista dotato di un intelletto feroce, Jaz Coleman – da 40 anni iconico front-man dei Killing Joke – è sempre stato ispirato da due correnti musicali: il rock sperimentale e la musica classica.

Sin dalla loro nascita nel 1978, i Killing Joke hanno giocato un ruolo fondamentale nella musica e nella cultura alternativa; l’intensità del repertorio della band, è sempre stata stimata dai fan, dai colleghi e dalla critica, così come l’ultimo album pubblicato Pylon (Spinefarm Records, 2015), con la line up al completo. L’elemento che Coleman sente come trascurato è quello della ‘bellezza paranormale’, caratteristica comune a molti brani dei Killing Joke, come “The Raven King”, “In Cythera” e molti altri – un elemento che un’orchestra potrebbe elevare e rimarcare…

Con Magna Invocatio – A Gnostic Mass for Choir and Orchestra Inspired by the Sublime Music of Killing Joke, disponibile su doppio CD /doppio vinile dal 29 novembre, Jaz Coleman rimarca questi elementi in grande stile…registrato con la più antica orchestra russa, la St Petersburg Philharmonic, l’album attinge agli aspetti più melodici del repertorio dei Killing Joke, sfruttando l’esperienza con la band iniziata durante gli anni dell’adolescenza, in quanto veicolo perfetto per una Messa Gnostica (un bellissimo e magico rito che celebra i misteri di ‘Thelema’).

What we have here is a passion project recorded at a time of international tension and delivered against the odds – “13 digestible epics”, five with full chorus, ordered to be experienced in a single sitting, and conceived to appeal to those not generally engaged with the world of orchestral music….“I wanted to revisit not just a succession of epiphanies that transformed my own life,” explains Coleman, “but also to portray some of the more hidden or occulted milestones of the human race that have captured my imagination for some four decades. So, I specifically chose an unusual combination of sacred texts that I discovered at different stages throughout my life. The only possible connection between them was that they had the immediate effect of inflaming and lifting my spirits to another level. They are, to coin a phrase, Words of Power!”Launching with a choral fanfare, aiming “to project the themes of ‘The Great Invocation’ to the four corners of the earth”, ‘Magna Invocatio’ is 90 minutes of powerful, transcendental orchestral music designed “to lift the listener up and away from the traumas of our world to another dimension, a more desirable reality where positivity and possibility, Agape and interconnectedness take precedence.”
