Manuel Gagneux di Zeal&Ardor: intervista

| |

Ciao!

English version of Manuel Gagneux’s interview below

Hello Manuel, nice to meet you! Tell me first why the title of this album…

We had a lot to think about. We didn’t reinvent ourselves, but we reduced and extended in way that makes me think “this is us!”. Also, we didn’t have many good ideas for the title… (laughs)

What about the cover of Zeal&Ardor? It’s unsettling but fascinating somehow. What does it mean?

It’s my hands actually, I designed myself. It’s the symbol for “as above, so below”, like the hand of Baphomet. It’s the Ying/Yang symbol with eyeliner, a little bit cooler and in the context of the album is perfect. We go at both extreme, as it’s heavier than before. It’s also weirder, and we try to make it flow as good as possible.

When I first got your self-titled new album, I had a feeling of a much heavier but more sophisticated sound. Is it the same fury that drove you to the composition of wake of a nation after Black Lives Matter?

This time you expanded your de-construction of the holiness as it is usually conceived, but not only from the point of view of Afro-American slaves: now it’s universal, it spaces from Götterdämmerung (apocalypse in Nordic mythology to the more gospel approach of death to the holy/feed the machine). Why did you decide to expand it?

I usually get bored very quickly, so the more I can choose from the happier I am. We took some elements from black metal and they are relying on some degree on Norse mythology, as it happens for Götterdämmerung, the Wagner opera! Wagner was used in context of Nazi, and I wanted to reclaim his music!

Artificial intelligence and the maze of our own minds. You told that it was artificial intelligence, and its development, that influenced the concept behind Run videoclip. And that reference to The Dance of Matisse. What do you find so fascinating in it?

In metal is very easy to fall into clichés. Blood, angry boys, fire. I wanted to avoid it. One part I thought it was an interesting context, and the feeling for the dancer must have been intense, perfect match with the painting.  It’s all about dualities, we are creating our own metaverse in Run videoclip. It was an Italian guy who created the visuals, Fabio Tozzo. It took ages to complete the whole screenplay! We were scared we couldn’t make in time. But at the end it was so satisfying that we made it.

Tell me about the concept behind the album. It is somehow terrifying, but it takes a while to reach the core of our minds, as it is Golden Liar. Did you take inspiration from the ongoing pandemic? And, also, from the recent happenings connected to Black Lives Matter revival?

I was hesitant to put it in in an obvious way. If you have a very good message but a bad song, no one’s going to care about the message, so… for me it’s all in the album. We released a whole EP about BLM and George Floy death last year, so we wanted it to be a separate beast, I guess.

How is Zeal&Ardor being currently received by audience and critics? Your singles are having a huge success on Youtube.

So far so good I would say! If it keeps on going like this, it would be fantastic. But who knows, maybe they’re going to hate the rest of the songs!

A huge part is played, in Z&A music by Marco Von Allmen drums. It was particularly impressing in Erase. How you two collaborate for composition? Aren’t there here more standard blues references that in the past (like in Hold your Head Low)? Did you record the rest of the instruments?

Yeah, I did all by myself. My body is too stupid to learn drums too, but I composed those parts myself on computer, and then let Marco play them. The rest, I recorded all myself. About the blues references you noticed, I listened actually more to ambient music recently. Maybe blues came bubbling again in my head while I was writing, even if the last time I listened to it was three years ago.

The ascent to international acclaim of zeal and ardor (as a band) was quite sudden. Did you expect that? Z&A is the most awaited and anticipated album of 2022. If you think about your beginnings, how do you feel about it?

Of course I never thought I had such success! I began this experiment in my bedroom and I would never expect it to go out of it! I’m also quite happy this success didn’t hit me when I was too young. I started when I was 26, and if it would have happened when I was 21 I would have become very arrogant right now. I’m always surprised even to these days when something happens. Today I’ve been talking to press the entire day, and I’m just amazed by this possibility. Most musicians are just annoyed, I guess.

But, tell me… have you ever been called a satanist?

A lot of people did call me like that! I guess I’m more of a philosophical satanist, libertarian, there are many aspects of it I can agree with. I come from a family of biologists and anthropologists; spirituality is very far from me in a traditional sense!

Will there be other non-english songs in future Zeal&Ardor albums? I bet that you speak other languages being Swiss.

Yes, I speak french, english and german. I started singing in English because, you know, it’s the international language of music. But then I realized the existence and success of Rammstein! German is such aggressive sounding language, it’s perfect for metal. I’ll do it again for sure (ndr: to record a song in English). Also French is very interesting, since it’s such a sweet language that could make a good contrast with black metal.

What would you suggest to a musician who wants to propose something “new” and “experimental” music as you did?

I would suggest… make music that you, yourself, like. Because if you try to sound like someone else, best-case scenario you would sound as something already existing. But no one can sound like you. That’s what a young musician must be pursuing. We played something like 100 concerts so far, and there’s always room for improvement, both live and both as composers. I really do hope we’ll manage to make a tour as soon as possible.

It was a pleasure to talk to you Manuel!

Also for me Giulia! Bye!
